Win Some, Loose Some

In preparation for Cari's shower this past Saturday, I was running around the house like a chicken with my head cut off - like I always do when more than one person is coming over... thinking that moments before they arrive is a good time to begin taking on the reorganization of my linen closet, because who knows? someone might just look in there! I digress.

In true Heather fashion, the day before I have a house-full of guests I decide that it would be a good day to attempt to make my very first turkey. Justin's work is kind enough to give us a GIANT turkey every year for Thanksgiving, so this year I made the whole thing just for the two of us. It was quite a project... I started on Thursday by making my own vegetable broth and then brined it overnight and followed Alton Brown's recipe. It turned out delicious, and we'll be eating turkey until Christmas. Late that night, after the turkey mess was all cleaned up, I still had desert to make for the shower, so naturally at 9pm, I decide to attempt to make my very first angle food cake. This one, not so great. Egg whites and I have never quite gotten along. The cake itself turned out tasty, just not very pretty... but the recipe I used said to balance the pan on the top of a bottle to cool so that it wouldn't sink. Yep, I took that literally, and used a pop bottle. As you can see, the bottle didn't fare so well with the hot pan. Hmmm... so not my shining baking moment, but Justin thought it was hilarious.
